Binaries

Initial setup for circular binary systems of compact objects.

Suitable initial data describing two compact objects in a binary setup requires solving the constraint equations of general relativity. It is a common procedure on the usual truncated Cauchy slices used in traditional binary simulations, but even in this case there are many aspects to improve.

The inclusion of two compact objects – let’s start with black holes, as they’re simpler – on a spacetime’s hyperboloidal slice will require a generalization of the traditional procedure. Previous work (like 0907.3163 [gr-qc] and this PhD thesis) has addressed the issue, but there is still much to be done!
